My Files Tool for Students

File Storage for Students
The My Files tool provides a way for students to store and manage files within the WebCT system. These files are available at any time, regardless of whether the student is enrolled in a class. The My Files tool is available within a course, only if the course designer adds that functionality to the course itself, otherwise this storage area is available through the Content Manager function, found on the MyWebCT page, described briefly in a separate document.

File Management Basics

The File Management Tool opens a window where you can see all your files and directories and gives tools for managing them: Note that the directories (folders) are also in the left panel (circled in red). If there are no directories, then that block will be empty, even if there are files. In the file display, if all files or folders do not display (in the limit specified), you will see some icons at the bottom for paging. There you specify a page number or click on the page button (). To specify how many to list on a page, click on the paging preferences icon ().
If you prefer to select a page range from the list, be sure to click on the green arrow to bring up that page after selecting the page. If you wish to view only a certain kind of file, use the feature. Select a type of file from the "All Types" pull down list and then click on the green arrow. To create files, get files or the create new directories (folders), click on the appropriate buttons at the top of the display. To manage the files and folders, click on the Copy, Move, Zip or Delete buttons at the bottom. A number of these functions can be obtained in the action menu link following the file or folder name ():

For files:
and for folders:

Note that this is the only place where you can initiate a download of a file or folder.

The Content Browser

If you click on Get Files, a pop-up window will appear to facilitate the uploading or moving of files to your file area:

In the left panel, you will see the file areas you have access to, including a link to "My Computer" (the bottom one) where you can go to get files to upload into WebCT. Click on either of these icons to get files from those areas. Any files selected from these areas are copied into the "My Files" area. Multiple files may be accessed at a time, the limit specified by the WebCT Administrator, is currently set at 20.

Once you have selected files, by clicking in the selection boxes at the left of the names, click OK and the files will be copied to your file area (where you were when you clicked "Get Files".) If you select files from "My Computer" you will do that from a Java Applet window that gives access to your local computer. If you close that window, you can select another method of browsing through your browser to get local files to upload.
